Reading and Writing

Writing

At Church Broughton C of E (C) Primary School, all classes follow a similar approach to writing following an agreed sequence of learning. This supports children in understanding the steps needed to understand how to write an effective text, whether this is a story, a newspaper report or a balanced argument.

Reading

For information about Phonics, please see our Phonics page.

EYFS and Key Stage 1 develop reading skills through a daily phonics lesson and shared reading sessions. We follow the FFT Sucess for All Phonics Programme. At Key Stage 2, children further develop their reading skills through daily guided reading sessions and class readers.  All children regularly read to a member of staff.  Key Stage 2 follow the Teaching Booth Reading Curriculum which has been adapted into a two-year rolling program (please see Long Term Planning) to meet the needs of our mixed aged setting.  Where possible, our reading curriculum is linked to the wider curriculum.

Teaching staff in Key Stage 2 adapt the Teaching Booth curriculum to reflect current wider curriculum learning as well as significant dates in the year such as Chinese New Year and Internet Safety Day.  An example of the curriculum can be found below.
